From Friday March 14th to Sunday, March 16th the City of Aschaffenburg will host the 3. International Competition for Chamber Music with Guitar within the 35rd Aschaffenburger Gitarrentage.

The competition is open for musicians of all ages and nationalities.

To be held in the presence of his honour the Lord Mayor of Aschaffenburg Klaus Herzog.

Jury

1. Jury-Members

A jury of five experts chosen from internationally renowned music academies will judge the competition. The jury will consist of:

  • Two members of the guitar department: Prof. Olaf van Gonnissen (Guitar Professor at Darmstadt and Hamburg) and Ivo Kaltchev (Kaltchev Guitar Duo)
  • One member of the wind instrument department: Peter Herteux (Solo-Bassoonist, Philharmonic Orchestra of Würzburg)
  • One member of the bowed instrument department: Laurentius Dinca (first violinist, Philharmonic Orchestra Berlin)
  • One vocal expert: Stefan Claas (Chamber Choir Leader Ars Antiqua).

Special Rule with Regards to Contestants and Jurors

If there is a family relationship between a participating ensemble member and a juror, or if the contestant has been a student of a juror for the last two years, the jury must be informed. In that case the juror loses his or her voting right for the ensemble concerned.

3. Assessment

After the first as well as after the second round, the jury will announce the contestants who have qualified to continue into the next round. The jury’s vote is expressed as an average mark for the ensemble in a particular round. Each jury member awards ensemble points between 1 and 100 per round, whereby 1 is the worst and 100 is the best mark.

1. Prize: 5,000 Euros and concert at the Aschaffenburger Gitarrentage 2015
2. Prize: 3,000 Euros
3. Prize: 1,000 Euros

Best original transcription: 350 Euros

Audience award: 350 Euros

Participation Fee

The participation fee is 100 Euros per ensemble and must be paid prior to the commencement of the competition. The participants will be given details about the bank account and methods of payment in due course.

The decision on the admittance to the competition will be made on the basis of the submitted material. All applicants will be informed in writing about the outcome of the preselection by January 31th, 2014.

Rule for Acceptance of Ensembles into the Competition

Guitar ensembles and chamber music ensembles with at least one guitar and at most four members are admitted to the competition. They have to be ensembles primarily devoted to the performance of classical music.

Competition procedures

1. Program

The program will go for about 70 minutes and must contain at least one piece by Johann Sebastian Bach and one own transcription. The competition consists of three rounds. An international jury of five will decide the outcome. There will be three prizes and one prize for best original transcription as well as an audience award. The jury reserves the right to interrupt the program at any time. Opuses from the preliminary round must not be repeated. Upon request the jury must be given a transcript of the notes for each performed opus. The decision by the jury is incontestable. Legal recourse is excluded.

2. Procedure

1st Round
Friday, March 14th, 2014 from 10:00 am
Length of time: 10 to max. 15 minutes

The program of the first round must contain a piece by Johann Sebastian Bach.

2nd Round
Saturday, March 15th, 2014 from 2:00 pm
Length of time: 20 to max. 25 minutes

The program for the second round can be chosen individually.

3rd Round and final concert with awards ceremony
Sunday, March 16th, 2014 from 5:00 pm
Length of time: 30 to max. 35 minutes

The program for the final round must contain one own transcription.

For the 2nd round a maximum of ten, for the final round a maximum of three ensembles will be competing. Each round is open to the public. Any performance exceeding the set time limits will be penalized with either point deduction or complete disqualification from the competition.

3. Order

The order of the performing ensembles will be allotted.

4. Registration

All participants must register at the latest one hour before the beginning of the competition on Friday, March 14 th at 9:00 am at the Competition office of the Staedtische Musikschule and identify themselves with a valid form of identification (passport or ID card). Furthermore a proof of payment of the participation fee must be presented. The organizer is not liable for possible personal injury or property damage that might occur in connection with the competition. All expenses for participation in the competition must be paid for by the participant. In the case of disagreements only the German version of this application and participation rules is legally binding.
